forty things meme

More thoughts from last night; Snape was complaining that I looked like a Hufflepuff sausage in my cycling clothes. I told him that black-and-yellow is practical, even though it doesn't flatter me, and that I know I need to lose weight...

1. She has an older brother, Michael, who is six years older than her.
2. There were two brothers born between her and Michael, who both died soon after birth, due to neonatal hemolytic jaundice from Rh-factor incompatibility.
3. She had two younger brothers and two younger sisters, who were killed by Death Eaters in an attack on Diagon Alley in 1975.
4. Emmy, Michael, and their father weren't present at the attack, but Emmy's mother was.
5. Emmy's mother Aoife Finnigan is a Squib, and the Finnigan grandparents were a Squib and a Muggle.
6. Emmy was in Ravenclaw House, along with her brother Michael.
7. Emmy has a facility with knot magic, but she doesn't talk about it or use it much.
8. She used her knot magic to spy on Snape in the locker rooms when she was a first year.
9. She is a Catholic and refuses to let the idiots and fanatics run her out of the Church.
10. She was raised in a more Muggle style, although her father and the rest of the Vector family made sure she knew about the wizarding world.
11. She associated the wizarding world with danger after her younger siblings were killed.
12. She decided even before she left Hogwarts that she was going to leave the wizarding world altogether.
13. Her parents did not approve of this.
14. She fought with her parents a lot about leaving the wizarding world, even before she left Hogwarts, and the summer after leaving Hogwarts, moved into the convent where her Aunt Dorothy (Mary Elizabeth) Vector was Mother Superior.
15. Aunt Dorothy was in Slytherin; some of the other Vector uncles were in Hufflepuff, one was in Gryffindor, but the majority of the Vector uncles were in Ravenclaw.
16. She entertained the possibility that she had a religious vocation, but rejected that, and her parents were quite relieved.
17. Her father, in relief, pulled some strings and called in some favors, and she got into Oxford, Christ Church College, rather at the last minute.
18. Her father was at Bletchley Park as a codebreaker during WWII, as were most of his siblings.
19. Her father continued on with MI5/MI6 and the Ministry of Magic after the war (as a Muggle-Wizard liasion), through the 1950s.
20. She got a first in mathematics at Oxford, showing everyone that she deserved to be there.
21. She met Brendon Donovan when she was a second-year at Oxford, at the Catholic parish.
22. Part of Brendon's attraction to her was that he was as opposite to Snape as she could find.
23. She eloped with Brendon shortly after she met him.
24. His parents insisted on a second ceremony, which was held at Notre Dame, Sacred Heart Church. They called in a fair amount of favors in order to do this on short notice.
25. She has been dancing since she was a little girl; first ballet and Irish dance, then later after she got a figure, she turned to belly dance, which upset her Egyptian great-grandmother.
26. After the wedding, she and Brendon were very busy with school.
27. It got even worse after she and Brendon went to the States, and he was in medical school while she was in graduate school.
28. She did not particularly care for teaching freshman calculus at U. Chicago, and so she feels some sympathy for Snape having to teach Potions as a required class.
29. She still doesn't particularly like teaching freshman calculus now, but accepts it as part of her cover, and the price she pays for getting to keep a foothold in the Muggle world and have computers to solve Arithmancy and mathematics problems with.
30. She thinks Snape needs to ease up a bit during the course of the semester, and stop taking out his frustrations on the students.
31. She thinks that Brendon cheated on her during the course of the marriage, but she has no actual solid proof. She's afraid that if she goes looking for it, she'll find it.
32. The Donovan parents-in-law did not like her at all, and blame her for Brendon's death.
33. She blames herself for Brendon's death as well.
34. She thinks that she's not that good of a teacher herself, so she doesn't dare give Snape advice.
35. The Donovan siblings-in-law liked her, and she still writes to one or two of them.
36. She didn't have any children during her first marriage. She and Brendon were trying during the last three months of their marriage, but were unsuccessful. She's afraid that she won't be able to have any children, but she will not discuss this with anyone.
37. Her mother used to frequently complain that Emmy was "just like her father, and none of me in you at all." Her mother eased up a bit on this once Emmy hit puberty and developed a figure more like her mother's.
38. When she found out that she was moving to Chicago with Brendon, her brother and her father gave her a lot of lessons in self-defense. She put these into practice a few times. Someone attempted to mug her in her first few weeks there, and she injured him quite severely. The next time she really had to put the lessons into practice was when Brendon was murdered by the Death Eaters.
39. Her baptismal name was Mary Elizabeth Fatima, but her parents started calling her Emmy (for M.E.) when she was still in the cradle, because there were far too many other Marys and Elizabeths in the family. She refused to respond to "Mary" or "Mary Elizabeth" or "Mary Elizabeth Fatima" when she was in Catholic school before Hogwarts, which infuriated the teaching nuns.
40. She is five feet five inches tall, brown hair and eyes. Her hair is yard-stick straight and down to her waist. She has a curvy figure like her mother's, but her coloration is all her father's.

1. Severus Snape is not a Christian at all.
2. He doesn't really believe in redemption.
3. He left Voldemort because he finally realized that what he was doing was wrong.
4. His mother was and is a researcher in Ancient Magic, and is frequently gone on archaeological digs and expeditions.
5. Snape was the one who came up with the formula for the poison gas that killed Emmy's younger siblings and harmed her mother.
6. He did not directly participate in the attack on Diagon Alley.
7. Snape came up with an antidote to the poison gas after he turned away from Voldemort.
8. His family has some money, but prefers to spend it on scholarship rather than show.
9. Snape's hair is greasy because he cannot find or devise the perfect shampoo. He refuses to admit that his hair is as greasy as it is, and keeps on looking for one shampoo rather than trying different types during the week.
10. He thought that Michael Vector was a bully on the Quidditch field, and annoying on or off it.
11. He keeps on remembering Emmy Vector as an eleven-year old girl.
12. He also remembers Michael Vector making graphic threats to him about what he would do if Snape didn't leave his baby sister alone.
13. He doesn't have any siblings.
14. His father and mother cooperated in their research, but now his father is dead.
15. Snape was not responsible for his father's death.
16. Snape has never been married, but he lost his virginity to Lilith Borgin Lestrade, who was engaged to Lestrade at the time.
17. Snape's sexual experience is quite limited, and he has been celibate since he left the Death Eaters.
18. He's too fastidious to hire a prostitute, will not commit rape, and doesn't trust any woman enough to go out and find a willing partner.
19. He is quite attracted to Emmy Vector, but doesn't know what to do about it.
20. He really enjoyed giving her the medicine for her sore throat, as it showed off his potion-making skills.
21. He is the wizarding world's equivalent of a science geek, of a Ph.D. chemist with few people skills.
22. He thinks that he was never in love with Lily Evans, but thought she deserved better than that James Potter.
23. He would much rather be in research or teaching at a university, but due to his past, he thinks he has no shot at it.
24. He takes out his frustrations on the students, and he knows he does it.
25. He frequently has forebodings of disaster, and he is usually wrong about what exactly the disaster will be.
26. He frequently makes errors about people's motivations and what is actually going on around him; he is always jumping to conclusions.
27. Despite this past history, he doesn't seem to be able to "check his assumptions at the door" and withhold judgment until he has more data.
28. It is a mystery how he can be such a good scientist when he jumps to conclusions so often.
29. He got mixed up with the Death Eaters because they already had a hold on Slytherin House.
30. He hated losing out academically and athletically to the Marauders and Michael Vector, so this is where the ideology grabbed him.
31. Lilith Borgin Lestrange was responsible for a lot of his corruption.
32. He left the Death Eaters a few years after he left Hogwarts.
33. Michael Vector was an Auror by then, and was the one who captured him.
34. Snape is six feet two inches tall.
35. He is still furious with Black, Lupin et al for the Shrieking Shack incident during their schooldays.
36. He does not really realize that he is not a good teacher, because he won't listen to the senior faculty's comments/criticism/advice.
37. He is ashamed of his past actions with the Death Eaters, and hopes that they will never come to light.
38. He does not think he can make any recompense for his past actions, but he struggles to do the right thing anyway.
39. He hopes that Vector never finds out that he contributed to her siblings' deaths.
40. He did not start teaching at Hogwarts until after 1979, so Emmy Vector was never his student.
