Well, it is going to be a stressful next few weeks -- still waiting to hear from places interviewed with (although heading into the time frame where most of the tech companies are doing their holiday shutdowns), minastir finally done w/ his last exam for the econ degree, and household upheavals planned. I even cracked this week and started applying for teaching jobs (K-12). Next I suppose will be the CIA

Good luck finding a decent-paying and satisfactory job. Your situation reminds me a bit of 1997-98, when I was out of work and searching. I took tests to be certified as a science teacher in Massachusetts (for five years, and I'd have to tske education courses for it to become permanent). Then I heard from the Patent Office, and got my current job. I suppose you could become a patent examiner if you get desperate enough, but I guess it hasn't come to that yet.

Hi -- I've applied to the PTO already (for both examiner and attorney positions) and so far no response. I guess they figure since I'm living in California that I can't be a serious applicant.

Or they're taking their time, being a bureaucracy. I applied in March, as I recall, and heard back from them in August.

I had a word with my SPE today. He says you need to apply through the Patent Office website. Then your name will be on a list, and supervisors may want to make offers to you. It depends on just what your skills are, which sublists you'll appear on (mechanical electrical, biotech, etc.) if I understood correctly. Then if a SPE in the appropriate art has a vacancy, he may get in touch with you, depending. Alos, the USPTO is hiring for now; it may or may not be, as of January 20th. The new administration may impose a hiring freeze for a while. We'll see.

Thanks. I have applied through the website, for the patent examiner (chemistry). I suppose it depends on how much work there is in the particular art unit.

It looks like the USPTO is going nuts w/ the hiring -- I've put in for examiner (GS-9 and -11), and there are various patent attorney and admin law judge openings as well...
