Initial thoughts on Only Good Enemies by Jennifer Estep
Oh man, was this ever a wild ride!
I was totally right about Vesper’s paternal family being the Zimmers. And Vesper got to deliver a great “the reasons that you suck” speech to her egg donor.
Nice to see Vesper and Kyrion developing both a relationship and a posse.
Zane Zimmer as Sir Percy Blakeney/Scarlet Pimpernel? Although I still think that Asterin Armas is far too good for him and deserves someone better.
My money is on Lady Beatrice Zimmer faking the documents to make it look like Vesper had died as a child. Liesl didn’t have any reason to do that IMAO, and Lady Beatrice wanting to hide her illegitimate granddaughter from everyone, even her greedy mother, makes much more sense.
So the next installment will be from Zane Zimmer’s perspective. Predictions: 1) he and Asterin wind up engaged per his precognitive talent. 2) it is seriously floated that Vesper be named heir to Wendell instead of Zane, as she’s the better engineer from the evidence so far and House Zimmer is all about the engineering. 3) a blowout fight between Vesper and Beatrice about how Beatrice treated her as a dirty little secret 4) not sure if the author will kill off the tyrant Callus Holloway and/or the evil Techwave in this installment or whether she will keep it going
Questions: where is Wendell’s wife/Zane’s mother? She hasn’t shown up at any functions yet, but Zane refers to her jewelry collection as though she’s still alive. Also, does Vesper have any maternal family besides her egg donor and deceased cousin? And what are the hard questions that Zane is going to deal with?
And James Fouhey did a great job on voicing Kyrion as usual- I have sampled some of his other work on Audible and can’t find him doing the exact same voice twice. He could melt steel with the RP British accent he uses for Kyrion Caldaren
And I find myself wanting to write fanfic about Kyrion and Vesper raising a family after Holloway and the Techwave are defeated, where Kyrion is a proud papa to several daughters and sons, Vesper is teaching all her children how to be engineers, and all the Caldaren children are irritated by their parents’ overprotective ways
Now I have to wait until February for the next installment
