Microsoft Word OS X keeps on losing my formatting for .doc files and sticking it onto the end of the document as pages and pages of stuff/visible metadata. Does anyone have an idea as to:
1) how I can stop it doing this?
2) how I can recover the proper formatting for my file & print out the damned thing looking the way I want it to look & the way I formatted it?

I wonder if this is related to a problem that drove me nuts with Word 98? In Word 98 (probably any version of Word on Windows - I know this problem is true through Office XP), the "open file of type" selector in the Open File dialog box is sticky - if you set it to 'Recover Text', it stays as 'Recover Text' until you change it.

I had a customer who complained that any time they opened a file, it lost all the formatting. I had to go watch - File, Open, double-click on file, no formatting. Find file in Windows Explorer, double-click on it - formatting! Huh? I had to poke at that system for 10 minutes or more before I figured out what was going on.

So, could it be something like this?

Y'know, it does keep on giving me that stupid "Recover Text From Any File" whenever I open a file. But I tried opening the file in a web browser and it had still lost the formatting...let me go try changing the Open File dialogue and see if that works.

Well, tried changing the Open File dialog and still didn't work on either Mac or PC. And yet the file says that the last time I saved it was March 19, not yesterday, so presumably the formatting is still there somehow...
