Thing the First: The Committee of Bar Examiners has advised me that I have been found to possess the good moral character required for certification to practice law in California. Letter announcing this came today, of course. Amended forms to the Bar Examiners telling them I switched jobs went out yesterday. Admission materials to be sent in 3-4 weeks...(and the state wonders why it's losing money...)
Thing the Second:
minastir and I were at Notre Dame recently. The old-timers and conservatives were out in full force --
minastir commented that it was like being on an episode of Doctor Who and traveling back in time. I nearly kissed the tarmac when I got back to California...
Anybody out there actually read The Vagina Monologues and care to comment on the Catholic character or lack thereof of the work? Haven't read it myself yet (although am planning to so that I can comment more intelligently on the controversy), but IMUAAO:
1) the University has much more important things to deal with, namely financial aid, building up the scholarship funds, and jobs for its graduates
2) IIRC, there were some very interesting medieval speculations & legends about virginity that would also squick out a fair amount of the alumni and students if presented -- the story about Mary's midwife for one
3)
minastir is wondering how much of this is a power struggle to get rid of or discredit the current university president (e.g. so that Opus Dei can get back onto campus)
Of course, I should be charitable, and I have been reminding myself that after all, the previous generations grew up with the Index. But I'd love to go back for a semester and teach the freshman writing course and make my class read Bujold, Pratchett, Flint, Jefferson, Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein, to mention a few names.
Thing the Third: of course, meme spammage. ( Detailed Starship Quiz )
