I want to start all the things, but I have been finishing things instead. I’m down to only one active knitting project and two embroidery projects, and I want to start another cross stitch project because that’s faster than the embroidery (fewer types of stitches to do). I have figured out that I prefer to start my cross stitch at top left of the fabric, stitch direction from lower left to upper right and then back across the row lower right to upper left to finish the x. This way I don’t run into as much trouble with starting the next row. I was reading the cross stitch magazines at Barnes and Noble last weekend and the counted cross stitch has a convention where you start from the center of the pattern (the fabric gets folded vertically and horizontally to find the center) and then work your way outward. This seems to make sense although I haven’t tried any counted cross stitch yet. Stamped cross stitch may be the easy setting of the game but it’s where I am at right now.

So what’s currently in progress:
1) overpass shawl (dark charcoal gray with yellow intarsia stripes, looks like the open highway; when finished I may offer it to Mr. Rudbek’s cousin who has been doing it a lot of road trips for academic purposes)
2) moth embroidery for my mom (not In Ravelry yet, who knows how long it will take to finish)
3) bicycle pillowcases, may give these to my godson if I don’t keep them
4) Tour of Ireland bag embroidery (need to bring this out of hibernation, also not in Ravelry yet)

On hold:
1) Christmas weaving (I need to rewarp the loom)
2) over 20 knitting projects actually in progress (I need to find and sort through these)

To start:
1) autopilot socks in blue and pink (I need to find a pattern that’s cuff down and accommodates my well-turned cycling calves; I could make an English footman weep with envy)
2) one of the foot-wide cross stitch projects?
3) tablecloth for my sibling as a Christmas present in stamped cross stitch
4) lobster print apron for my sibling-in-law in stamped cross stitch (which has the benefit of freaking my Midwestern sibling out)
5) quilt blocks in stamped cross stitch

I should have gotten a haircut and manicure today but I didn’t make any plans and I started working later than I planned so I didn’t have much time to walk to the places I would get it done. A few weeks ago I had tried out a gel manicure and pedicure and I wound up peeling it off my fingernails only. So now my fingernails are still soft and peeling.

And I want to have some active projects to take with me in two weeks when I go on vacation (3-hour drive one way to the coast, so 4-6 hours of crafting time; I haven’t tried cross stitch in the car yet). The local yarn store will probably be closed by the time I get there so I should bring at least one knitting project and at least one cross stitch or embroidery project. The next closest yarn store will be an hour away. Beach knitting can become problematic as wool picks up the moisture in the air and then the needles feel all sticky. Salty Yarns in Ocean City used to be right on the boardwalk and half of their store was cross stitch instead of yarn (cotton thread being easier to work with on the beach?) They have moved off the boardwalk due to planned construction, but I may consider getting one of their specific kits for Ocean City and the year. Not this time though as it would be a detour from our destination.
