Hello to [livejournal.com profile] lizbee who newly friended me.

I tweaked Ch. 33 a bit and submitted it to FA last night. I'll have to see how long it takes to get posted there. Brooke really appreciated the review on ff.net that "Sev and Emmy really do deserve each other..." And another reviewer on ff.net likes the possibility that Vector could be pregnant...

I had fun last night on FA comparing Snape to a fictional Navy Admiral (Simpson from Eric Flint's 1633.) The Navy/Slytherins "take care of their own." Hmm, here's a random thought. Compare/contrast the four Houses of Hogwarts with the four branches of the military....

Slytherin = Navy (wedded to old tradition, taking care of their own)
Gryffindor = Marines (crazy with valor -- you can't sneak up on a beach)
Hufflepuff = Army (overworked & underappreciated)
Ravenclaw = Air Force (intelligent enough to attack from a distance)

I will cheerfully await all criticisms of my off-the-cuff characterizations...

The scary thing is, that fits in perfectly with my Elemental assignments for the Houses, too.

(Slytherin - Water, Gryffindor - Fire, Hufflepuff - Earth, Ravenclaw - Air)

Now I really want someone to write a Hogwarts version of Apocalypse Now starring Justin.

Well, the thing that makes me twitch is that it only works from some aspects. If the Houses would correspond to the branches of the military in this fashion, Slytherin and Hufflepuff would be the ones with the long-standing rivalry, Ravenclaw would be perceived as the "lazy upstarts," and Gryffindor would be given a wide berth by everyone else...Ah well, maybe it's different for the British military than the American military...

Well, do we know that isn't the case sometimes? Given the snarky comments from Draco about Hufflepuffs, I could see there being a rivalry there when Hufflepuff isn't being outshone by a particularly crazy set of Gryffindors who broke a Slytherin winning streak.... ;) Hufflepuff may be the least likely House to shoot for glory on purpose, but somehow, despite the "duffer" comments, I suspect them of being very solid.

But I cheerfully (if somewhat confusedly) admit to having developed something of a fond Hufflepuff bias at some point, despite having very few ideas for actually writing about most of them. And the family I've had in the military has, I think, mostly been Army. So who knows....

I'm not sure you could have an upstart House when they were all started a thousand years ago, though.

Oh, most of my relatives in the military have been in the Army, with a Marine great-grandfather and a Navy uncle (by marriage) to break up the monotony. So I see your point about Hufflepuff being rather solid and not shooting for glory on purpose. Shooting for glory on purpose only gets you killed young, after all, and they're not those crazy Gryffindors to go out and make full frontal assaults in ways where you can't sneak up on people.

Very true about no "upstart Houses" if they were all founded at the same time, although I suppose you could do something about Ravenclaw having more Muggle-borns than the other Houses...

"Blasted Ravenclaws with their infernal curiosity about all these new-fangled Muggle academic disciplines...!"

Hello! You showed up in my list of recent friendings, so I followed you and decided you were interesting. Plus, I'd already seen your commentary on the recent F_W-AJHallgate, and liked it a lot.

You know, I can see that comparison. Not in terms of background, of course, but there are definitely characterization parallels to be drawn.

And, hey, dragging Eric Flint into a discussion is never a bad thing. :)

Oh, yes. Eric Flint is great. My husband had to buy both 1632 and 1633 for me in hardback, and then I went and bought 1632 in paperback so I could lend it out. Then I have the entire Belisarius series so far, and I'm awaiting the last one...I went and read your comments about Flint in your LJ, and I friended you. I hope you don't mind.
