I called up Brooke tonight to offer my sympathy. Brooke was quite down, as I expected. However, we did talk for quite a long time, and I think I managed to take her mind off matters for a little while. We set up some letter exchanges between Mike and Emmy, Snape and his mother, and then a conversation over lunch between Edmund Vector and Narcissa Malfoy.

edited to add: The reviews for the last chapter make interesting reading. Some readers think that Snape will do just fine as a father once he gets used to it. Some readers don't see a happy ending if Vector is pregnant. And one clever reviewer caught the hole in Emmy's logic!

I see Snape's mother as being a bit like Amelia Peabody Emerson in Elizabeth Peters's novels; eccentric archaeologist, and Snape resents her "neglect" of him. Snape's mother is currently in Peru on a dig...

Mrs. Snape’s letter to her son; Dear Severus: I have been informed by reliable sources that you are engaged to be married. Is this true? Think carefully before you answer. As I understand it, you have gotten yourself engaged to one Emmy Vector Donovan, who is a colleague of yours at Hogwarts. I have been told that she is human, female, a widow, and a Ravenclaw. From what I understand, she is also half-Irish, a Roman Catholic, childless, at least one-quarter Muggle, and a relation of that awful Michael Vector who was in your year and a Beater on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. However, I have also been informed that there are rumors of criminal charges against her in America. Narcissa Malfoy tells me that she has met Professor Donovan, or Vector as she refers to her, and thinks that she might do for you. I can usually trust Narcissa’s judgment, but I hear from Mrs. Wilkes that there has been a spot of trouble between Professor Donovan and Lucius Malfoy. Sincerely yours, Your Mother.

Snape’s response to his mother: Dear Mother: The information that I am engaged to be married is correct. So is the information about my fiancee’s gender, species, House affiliation, and health. She goes by her maiden name professionally and personally. None of this is secret. Answering this does not require careful thought on my part, as it is all public knowledge. We have not set a date yet. When we do, of course you will be invited to the ceremony, and in fact, you are welcome to meet her when the two of you are on the same continent. I wish I had equally good information about your current activities, but I only know what you see fit to enlighten me with. I am glad my forthcoming marriage has aroused your interest. Very sincerely, your son, Severus Snape.

Snape’s mother: Dear Severus, My current activities deal with persons who are thousands of years dead. Your and Professor Vector’s activities deal with corpses of a more recent provenance. Naturally, I am a little concerned by such matters. And if I may be frank, Severus, I have great faith in your intelligence, but rather less in your judgment. Sincerely yours, Your Mother.

Snape writes back: Dear Mother, my fiancée does not normally deal with corpses. There was a war on; I’m sure you heard of it. And as for my judgment, you are the one who said she trusted Narcissa Malfoy. While it is enlightening to learn what you think of my judgment, you are really not in an ideal position to tell me how it should be modified. I fail to see how the study of thousand-year old corpses helps you reach reliable conclusions about the nature of living persons you do not know. I’m sure you have more important things to do than continue this correspondence. Very sincerely, your son, Severus Snape.

Having failed to starve out my unruly innards and force them to behave, I have overwhelmed them with salsa and spices. This did not work overly well either. So that's why I'm up and writing. I hate having a food allergy. I really, really hate it.
