when a youngish man (under to approx. 30) dressed in a cassock walks into the restaurant you're at, and one of your first thoughts is "Wow! Why didn't [insert character here] (hush up, Emmy Vector) kick Snape's feet out from under him at the first available opportunity? Now I understand the whole 'Father What-a-Waste' thing..."

(And the fellow was tall and skinny as well. If he'd had shoulder-length black greasy hair, black eyes, and a larger nose, he could have passed for Snape. I also now understand the comment of one of my college classmates who spent 3 years in seminary, that girls thought he was either safe or a challenge...)

The husband and I spent a lot of time discussing whether said young man was a priest, seminarian, or merely in costume. Since he was with a young couple with a baby in regular clothes, he probably was not "merely in costume." However, I've never seen anybody that young wearing a cassock for real, and I've been educated at a number of Roman Catholic-affiliated schools. Old priest, 90 years older than God, yes, I've seen a live one in a cassock, but not somebody my own age....

I've seen an Anglican priest in maybe his thirties wearing one, although it was for a funeral. (He had jeans underneath. *grin* The vicar in Elm, Cambs back in 1998, coolest guy in the world.)

Man, I'd have loved to see that. Cassocks are probably my favourite article of clothing ever. Dare I ask what city this was?

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, in an Italian restaurant called Buca di Beppo. And Buca di Beppo is not a fancy place; it is a loudly Italian place...

Heh... *wipes chin at mere mention of a real Italian restaurant*

Okay, going to Milwaukee, going out for Italian (whether I'm allergic to it or not), watching for young Godly men in dresses...

Well, as I said, that was the first priest I'd seen in a cassock in quite some time. Don't make a special trip here just for that...but we do have neat summer festivals at a park on the lakefront for most of the summer.

And Buca di Beppo is a (small) chain. They started in Minneapolis in 1993, and now have restaurants in several U.S. states. Even my brother likes them, and since he and I are both part-Italian, that speaks fairly well for their authenticity. Cannolis on the dessert menu never hurt, either...

Fr Chris (age 26) used to wear a cassock. Now *that* was a 'what-a-waste' - he was a truly brilliant and highly gifted priest, and a good mate. He was certain of his calling, but - well, we sighed...

Roman Catholic priest or Anglican priest? That's an advantage you Anglicans have over us Roman Catholics IMO; you're smart enough to let your priests go ahead and get married.

Fr Chris was RC.

And I'm not sure it's so smart...
